The Basics Of Web Design

The Core Of Your Online Marketing

A website is the core of your online marketing activities.

If you look at all the marketing channels and techniques such as social media platforms, display and search advertising what they actually do is bring visitors to your website.

The most important purpose of your website is turning these visitors into customers. That’s it.

This transformation from web site visitor to business customer is called conversion and a bad website will basically cause you to waste the money on other marketing methods, because you don’t need more visitors if you can’t turn them into customers.

The better your website is, the more visitors are converted into your customers, and it doesn’t really matter whether you are in retail, provide local services, or build houses. The principle holds across the entire board.

First The Bad News

Many people call themselves web designers but they are “techies” with some HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP and who knows what else coding expertise.

Without much planning they can quickly create a website for you. It has lots of information, photos and your contact details.

Is this the way to turn your visitors into your customers ? Is this what you need ?

The simple answer is NO.

Now The Good News

Follow these 7 basic phases of web design process and make your web site a conversion machine.

Phase One. Analysis

The first step is always about information gathering.

In this phase you and the designer identify things like the website purpose. What are your goals for things like target audience ?

Phase Two. Planning

In planning you conceptualise the site map structure and appropriate technologies for building the site

Phase Three. Design

This is the visual styling phase where we are developing usability and excellent user experience on the site.

Phase Four. Content

Your web content in various formats from text to images, video and audio must be optimised to enhance the conversion process of visitors into customers.

In this phase we start to create and curate your website content.

Search engines take this content very seriously in deciding how to index and importantly rank your website. Your conversion goal will not work if you are not high up on the search engine’s results page because of poor content.

Phase Five. Development

Based on the technologies agreed in phase two you can now start to develop your web site. These days you can be as simple or complex as you can afford for this phase.

There are many drag and drop or WYSIWYG web builders out there or you can use hand coded techniques if appropriate. Of course, the former is cheaper than the latter method.

Responsive design in which your web site is optimised for all platforms including desktop, tablets and mobile phones is critical in this stage.

Phase Six. Testing

In phase six you test all the technical features like code and scripts, compatibility with major browsers, responsiveness and loading speeds. You also ensure security in the form of SSL is working correctly.

Importantly as you test you also refer back to the point of whether or not the finished product will “convert.” This as we’ve seen is the major purpose of all this work.

Phase Seven. Deployment

In phase seven you deploy the site into a live environment BUT your work is just starting.

You must now move into a management and control environment where you monitor the site for its performance against your conversion goal.

You need to ensure the site is optimised using ongoing SEO and start to implement digital marketing techniques to funnel people to the site.

You must also measure, using analytics, what is happening to your site visitors so you can manage needed improvements to help convert more of them into customers.

Finally maintenance and software updates must be scheduled into your business routine.
